Today Peyton's endocrinologist has decided to turn off Peyt's insulin drip & start his insulin shots! This is a HUGE step for him! He is 7 lbs 2 oz & has enough subcutaneous fat to withstand the shots. His glucose at 1:00 p.m. was 96, which is a perfect number to start this adventure with. They took his glucose, gave him a dose of Lantus- type of insulin usually works longer than regular insulin Up to 24 hr duration, fed him, turned off his insulin drip & will recheck his glucose every 2 hours. Dr. Clements (endocrinologist) will be accessible today & tonight if anything goes wrong. If by 9:00 p.m. his glucose is not where it needs to be they will give him a dose of Humalog- rapid-acting human insulin analog used to lower blood glucose- to bring down his numbers fast so we don't have any scares.
If all goes well through the weekend, while Trev & I are down Monday-Thursday we will learn how to put in a NG tube to assist with feedings, we will also be doing all of his insulin shots as well & we will learn how to use a glucometer to check his sugars.
Keep Peyt in your prayers that this goes well & we can bring him home soon!!
Grandma & Grandpa Mecham went see Peyt yesterday!!
